Dora to Celebrate National Night Out with free food and Smokey Bear

To celebrate National Night Out, community groups are sponsoring a picnic, “East Fork Meet & Greet,” in Dora that will include free hotdogs and an appearance by Smokey Bear on Tuesday, August 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Volunteers will grill hotdogs with all the fixings and serve up chips, drinks, cake and ice cream—all free to participants. Funding for the celebration is provided by the Dora Friendly Club, Dora-Sitkum Rural Fire Protection District, and individual donors.

The picnic at Dora Center, located on the East Fork of the Coquille River about 19 miles east of Myrtle Point, will be an opportunity for residents and visitors to meet representatives from agencies that provide emergency services and law enforcement in Dora, Sitkum, and McKinley.

Planning to attend the picnic—barring emergency calls—are a Coos County sheriff’s deputy, a Bureau of Land Management enforcement officer, Coos Forest Protective Association firefighters, Coos County commissioners, and Dora-Sitkum Rural Fire Protection District firefighters. Smokey Bear will be on hand to remind everyone that “only you can prevent wildfires.”

“No speeches—just fun and free food on a summer evening in Dora,” said a spokesperson.
